I love sweet potatoes just about every way you can serve them. Roasted with olive oil, sea salt, and curry. Sliced thin and baked in layers with apples, pears, cardamom, and dried cranberries. Slow cooked alongside a roast. Yum, yum, and oh yeah…yum! But there is something special about the candied sweet potato pies, casseroles, and souffles that are traditional at Thanksgiving! They definitely aren’t something you want to try to incorporate as an everyday side. Sweet, buttery and oh so rich, these sweet potatoes are an indulgence.
This particular recipe is from my husband’s side of the family and it’s always a big hit. In fact, it converted a few family members who have stated in the past they do not like sweet potatoes!
This recipe card is written by my mother-in-law – the Wee Lairds Grammie – and I love getting to have copies of recipes like this. Seeing our parents and grandparents handwriting somehow adds a special value to these family recipes. It makes them a special keep sake we can look at and cherish year after year as we pull out these recipes and honor family traditions.

It’s a strange Thanksgiving this year. The pandemic has us all home, quarantined, and for many of us- separated from family. But these family recipes can help keep those we love close in our hearts – even if they can’t be close in proximity.
From all of us here in The Wee Laird’s Kitchen we wish you all safety, delicious food, and a very Happy Thanksgiving.
